Artificial intelligence is a hot topic at nearly every healthcare conference this year. How hot is it going to be at HMPS in Las Vegas this April? Well, looking through this yearâs conference agenda, I saw eight sessions in three days that include the term âAIâ in the title. Iâm sure other sessions will address AI as well.
Is that a lot of focus on AI? Yes. Is it justified? Yes! And Iâm not just saying that because Iâm on a panel thatâs presenting at one of those eight sessions.
Here are four factors that justify the heavy focus.
AI is driving real change. Healthcare overall is in desperate need of interventions that can improve experiences for patients and providers at all levels. Generative AI is making a difference already and holds much hope for the future. Despite general misgivings about AI overall on the part of the public, healthcare is an area where a significant number of people do feel hopeful about the potential positive impact.
Hype and hope are converging. Yes, companies are slapping âAI poweredâ labels on everything from toasters to toothbrushes. Thatâs hype. However, weâre seeing real applications in healthcare that are coming to market right now. Innovation is happening fast.
Guidance and implementation help is needed. Governance challenges are real, but many organizations are taking a thoughtful approach backed by attention and resources. Itâs vital to talk about those steps and provide roadmaps for smaller organizations as they wade into the AI waters.
Career development is at stake. Marketers and communicators need to understand how AI can support their work. âAIâs not going to take your job. Somebody who knows AI is going to take your job.â Thatâs a quote from Scott Galloway, a business professor, podcaster, and tech media gadfly. Even that statement from Galloway might be a little too strong, but now is certainly the time to learn how AI can â and canât â raise your professional work to the next level.
If youâve read this far, youâre likely interested in attending at least a few AI sessions during HMPS. Yes, could visit the HMPS website to search out and find the sessions. You could also simply keep reading this post. Letâs do that!
